Making Sense of the Unimaginable
One Man’s Experience in the Tsunami of 2004

Brian Rovetta, recruiting professional and Moscow resident, was on vacation in Phuket, Thailand, during the December holidays of 2004, and witnessed first hand the devastating Boxing Day tsunami. An experienced diving professional, Mr. Rovetta used his skills to assist the rescue and recovery efforts, including diving in an underground shopping center to recover the bodies of victims. Now, many months later, he revisits that experience.

The deadly tsunami waves of December 26, 2004, caused by an earthquake beneath the Indian Ocean, struck over a dozen countries from the coast of Africa to Southeast Asia, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Hardest hit were Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand, in that order. More than 100 thousand people were killed in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, alone. Ten months later, millions of people are still homeless and in need of continuing aid. Mr. Rovetta’s message to all of us? "Don’t forget about these people."
